Effective Performance Review Systems

There are many ways to create effective employee performance review systems, but no matter the style of system, all successful systems share a few key elements.

First, they are customized to the situation and the job description. Using a performance review template from the web or an e-book is a great start, but the template will need to be adjusted to fit your particular work situation.

In addition to being customized, successful employee performance evaluation forms also have goals that are SMART. This doesn’t mean clever! Rather, it refers to objectives that are specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and time-bound.

Your wallflower employee won’t feel as though they are set up for success if his or her performance goal is to become more outgoing. It’s too vague, and there is no way to measure it. However, they will feel like they have an achievable goal if the task is to make contact with 2 existing clients and 1 new customer each week.

Finally, effective employee performance review systems should be about the company and the person as an integrated whole. This is not to imply that managers will be responsible for employees’ work-life balance, but rather to suggest that a truly successful performance review template will maximize the strengths and talents of the employee to serve the company.

Each employee is a unique contributor with unique development needs. By keeping these quirks and needs in mind as the review system is being set up, one is more likely to get success and smooth execution of the deliverables.

Until next time
